TAMPA, Fla. — Officer Madsen sacrificed his life to save others. Here at the police district where he worked, they plan to honor that sacrifice for all time.
“It is a celebration celebration,” said Tampa Police Major Eric DeFelice. “Jesse would not want us to be hanging our heads and mourning the loss of him.”
Major DeFelice and Officer Madsen were friends. The major took part in the memorial ceremony in front of Tampa Police Headquarters. Tuesday night, other friends, family and fellow officers gathered to not only remember Jesse and his sacrifice, but also to raise money for a memorial in his honor.
“Every person that put on the uniform is a hero, but Jesse was truly a cut above,” Eric said. “So it’s personal to me. We were friends outside of here and it was only fitting that we think of something to honor him with a sculpture and the artist we commissioned to create it. That would be something spectacular because that’s what Jesse was.”
Organizers hope to erect a statue by this fall.
